Travel Boom Expected This Summer

Memorial Day weekend is the official kickoff to summer, and after over a year of working, schooling and socializing online from home, Americans are itching to get out and travel. As Covid restrictions continue to lift at a steady pace throughout the U.S., Europe and other countries, the summer of 2021 is expected to see a travel boom.

In addition to the typical influx of road, air and sea travel during the summer months, many people are also planning “revenge travel” to make up for trips they had to cancel last year.  According to the U.S. Travel Association, 72% of Americans will take at least one trip this year.

Road Trips are the Most Popular Form of Travel This Year

The most popular expected form of travel will be by car. Although the CDC has relaxed its travel guidelines for vaccinated individuals, foreign flights and cruises still have restrictions. Also, there is currently a shortage of rental cars throughout the country.  Therefore, many are looking to cure their cabin fever with a road trip in their own cars. We are already seeing signs of increased road traffic:  gas prices have already increased 60% since last year with more drivers on the road. Campgrounds are booking up more than in 2019, and national parks like Yosemite are now requiring reservations.

Tips to Stay Safe on the Road

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has the following words of wisdom for drivers to avoid auto accidents and ensure your dream vacation this summer doesn’t turn into a nightmare:

“Slow Down, Stay Cool—Obey All Speed Limits.”

Additional tips include:

  • Avoid road rage and driving aggressively. After all, you’re on vacation and supposed to be having fun!
  • Be mindful of motorcycles, trucks, and tourists who may not know where they’re going
  • Maintain a safe distance. Traffic can come to a sudden stop at any time for no apparent reason
  • Don’t look at your phone! Texting while driving is illegal in most states, and looking for directions on your phone is just as dangerous. Plan your route ahead of time.

Taking the time to prepare before your trip and staying calm, focused and relaxed while driving can help you have a more enjoyable and less stressful vacation.
