Staying Safe on Florida’s Roads and Highways
Florida Roads: Surviving the Snowbirds

It may still feel like summer here in Florida, but winter has already arrived for our northern neighbors, driving snowbirds down for the season.

In this issue: Florida Roads, Surviving Snowbirds, we give you 3 easy tips to help you manage the roads in Florida and avoid a car accident  during tourist season.

AAA estimates that more than 500,000 people move to Florida for the winter and millions more travel here on vacation.

Below are a few tips to help Florida’s resident and tourist drivers stay safe on the roads, based on the article “Flocking to Florida” in the November/December 2015 issue of AAA Living:

Be Aware. Vacationers and part-time Florida residents are not as familiar with our roads, highways, and exits, making them more likely to drive more slowly, stop suddenly, and change lanes frequently. Put down your phone and pay attention to the road at all times.

Be Patient. Slow down and give yourself extra time to get to where you are going this time of year, especially during the holidays when out-of-state travelers are at an all-time high in Florida. Avoid tailgating or honking your horn excessively. Otherwise, you’re the one likely to be cited for following too closely or driving aggressively in the event of an auto accident. Being responsible for an accident, in turn, can cause your insurance rates to increase or your policy to be cancelled.

Be Proactive. Make sure your car is in good working order before the snowbirds and tourists arrive; that includes getting your brakes and tires checked as well as your oil changed. This will also help prevent accidents, and you may avoid longer wait times at your local mechanic for routine service.

These tips should help you with driving on Florida roads surviving snowbirds.
